Joining the dots between practical vocal health and the everyday capabilities of performance venues.

In 2020, whilst studying the Vocal Health First Aider course with Vocal Health Education, it struck me that some of the most basic but fundamental vocal health strategies were relatively cheap and easy for singers to do.

However, implementing these strategies often became challenging for singers when touring, gigging, performing and rehearsing.

But many venues already have facilities that would enable singers to maintain basic vocal hygiene when in their working environments, top of the list being simply access to a kettle!

This was the beginning of my idea for the ‘Voice Friendly Venue’ scheme.

I have worked with the Roses Theatre to start implementing this scheme in their venue, with positive impacts already reported.

In March 2025, I was over the moon to present my current experience and ideas so far on ‘Voice Friendly Venues’ at the Breaking Free One-Day Vocal Health Education Conference held by Vocal Health Education.

I am now looking to work with other performance venues to collaborate & roll out ‘Voice Friendly Venues’.

Please contact me directly to see how your venue could become a ‘Voice Friendly Venue’ - it is easy to implement and could have a positive impact on the health of performers working at your venue.

What is a Voice Friendly Venue?

A venue that provides basic facilities that enable singers to maintain vocal health whilst in working environments such as theatres, performance venues, studios and rehearsal rooms.

A venue that provides information on what facilities will be available for singers prior to their arrival, e.g. kettle, space to warm up, etc.

A venue that signposts to further information on vocal health, e.g. BAPAM, HELP MUSICIANS, etc.
